 HEALTH AND WELLNESS

These two words – ‘health’ and ‘wellness’ may seem to look alike literally in meaning but I am happy to inform you that, they are not but two different concepts that are quite variable, and there meanings are also different.
According to World Health Organization (WHO):
 “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (illness)”

 “Wellness is the optimal state of health of individuals and groups, and it is expressed as a positive approach to living.”
This is to say that; wellness is not just mere physical health. It is holistic and multidimensional. It comprises of six dimensions which include: physical, intellectual, emotional, environmental, social and spiritual wellness.
It is more involving than being in good health alone. This is why a man, after taking the entire necessary food supplements, eat ideal nutritious meals, eat all fruits and vegetables necessary for his system; people see him as a healthy man because he is full of life, vigour and highly energetic. But inside him, he may still be suffering for one thing or the other; for example, he may not be having good sleep. Though, such man could be seen as a healthy person, he is not well because, he is not having good night sleep.
Externally, the man may see it as small phenomena because the problem does not stop him from his daily activities, but deep inside, it may be a symptom of a big disease in making. This is why all noticed health problems in our system must be attended to immediately it shows up itself. We should not wait until the big disease manifests itself physically before we start to run to the hospital for treatment. In most cases, such situation may lead to the death of the affected person at the end because, the disease might have eaten so deeply into the system before its appearance on the patient; a good example of this is cancer disease.
This is why caring for our health on daily bases comes to play it’s vital role (as explained in my last post titled – ‘Health is Wealth.’) this is where that statement of wisdom – ‘prevention is better than cure’ has come to play its big role in the life of human beings.
The truth is that, when we effectively take care of our health on daily basis, we are preventing the physical appearance of diseases in our system. Logically, when we are free from sickness of any kind, there will be no cause for us to start to run to the Doctors (otherwise known as health managers) all the time for solutions to our health problems. As we can see physically these days where many people are being rushed to the emergency departments of both Government and private hospitals on daily basis for the treatment of one ailment or the other. This happens on daily basis because people neglect their duties of taking care of their health on daily basis. This could be due to ignorance or intentional act. Whichever it may be amongst the two, the punishment is sickness which the person involved will have to pay for severely either by cash or in pains with a lot of down hours on daily basis in terms of productivity as long as they remain in bed. The implications of this are huge. Some of these are: drainage of resources because the person in bed can no longer work and make money; family becomes unrest and unhappy; the family also will need to go into debt after their savings have been exhausted – just to mention a few amongst the trauma that will be facing the family. The saddest aspect of it all is that the person in bed for several months could still die after spending a lot of money and unrecoverable valuable time in the hospital. This situation is generally unpalatable and it is not anything anybody should pray for. It is therefore very important that one should do his or her best to care for his or her health at the right time in order to totally avoid this type of situation in life.
A wise statement thus says: ‘health is neither valued nor appreciated until one loses it.’ It is not necessary to be a medical Doctor before you can take care of your health on daily basis. It is a task that is within your capacity. If you act right and effectively on your health, you will always feel good, happy and healthy: your hospital bill will reduce drastically; you will have more good time to run your business effectively. To top it all, joy and peace will reign in the family. This really, is the essence of life.
The question now is; how do I go about taking care of my health on daily basis?
